Andrew made me a feminist at 8, so none of you boys had a chance

by Vere Mantratriad

sleeping beauty
why's your light on?
why's your crown
around your ankles?
sweet baby, roar
and throw me an
image taken through
the lids of your eyes
why oh why oh why are
you so worried when you
know your prince has
come and will come again
until he's ready to
walk away and stay away
and blame the end on
all the things you would
dare to say so don't say
a word, honey, no just
keep your lips and eyes
tightly shut just stay
asleep and in your
dreams at least he'll
still be charming.

Author's Note: True story:

At 8 years old, I received my first kiss.
My best friend at the time and I were playing Sleeping Beauty.
He, as the prince, bent over and kissed me on the lips to wake me up.
The babysitters happened to walk in at that moment.
I got put in the corner for the rest of the night.
He got to go right back outside to play.

Story of my life.

all night i am tossed around by darker princes on darker horses. guys named andrew having a way of taking all. there is an unjustice in the world called men. it isn't fair. nice job.

It's the old story of double standards, is all. I love the last line because it sums up the poem so nicely. I don't know how many times I've seen a guy who I think might be wonderful. Then the dang fool has to go and open his mouth and SPLAT! that dream gets smashed to smithereens. Glad to see you up on the favorites.

...when i was little my older brothers told me and my neighbor to both whistle, then they pushed us into each other, and after the kiss she ran home crying as my brothers laughed at me...story of my life...

heh...love the poem. as always i adore the way you string your words together...just wonderful. the author's note just made me chuckle. my brothe and i were playing barber shop and he cut one of my pony tails off at the band...i got in trouble and he was sent outside to play....what is up with that?

I find this devastatingly sad on so many levels. Almost too painful. Beautiful work.
