We Are Forced To Let You Go

by Tony Whitaker

So many times
I’ve spoken those words
and the sometimes sad perspective,
it has gotten easier
these nine years

I often wonder where
these rejected souls land
in their unexpected new world
forced upon them,
in their own eyes, by me

There are so many reasons
these everyday people
are terminated for cause
from procrastination to porn
in each case, the cause, their own

I now understand
the evolution of thought
from rookie policeman to veteran
in the failure,
at some point, of someone to fit

It is not that we do not care
for the “perp”
delivering our cuffs
in our own way
enforcing the rules of the game

Time tests and hardens.
though people are different
the message and delivery barely deviates
and this sameness
leads some to be numb or insane

But then there are times
we do make a difference
seeing their creative spirit
leading them to success
in another world in other jobs

As I look back
at my career
good or bad
it has gotten easier
these nine years
