Moxie

by Angela Cotterman

I have been asked
to name a horse,
from Montana, born
three and a half days
ago. Horses and I
have no history. Well,
there was that one,
but no names were exchanged.
I've begun to meddle
in horse business,
and ask what this colt
will be expected to do
when it grows older,
and I am laughed at
and told it's a horse.
I know it's a horse,
and I suggest Orion,
or some other static
star hero, but it's pointed
out to me that this fellow's
forehead is starless,
so constellations are out
of the running. Careful,
I think to tell them,
the sky may be hard to avoid.

Being from New England, when I read the title, I expected something along the lines of the soft drink. What I got though was much more satisfying. Nice write, Jim
