Thief!

by Darren Swift

It was helped by the line of her jaw,
the teeth shaped and spaced even, slight
underbite framed by full blooded lips.
I put it in my pocket, I had to have it,
I simply took it, I stole her smile.

She replaced it with a painting, a false
facade for the outside world to view;
together, alone, she fed me her hate,
I swallowed while she wallowed,
Then followed her into her hell.

I tried to return it, disguised it
between gifts and gilded lies but
the truth built borders around us.
Concrete hardened, barbed wire guarded,
her eyes darkened, her smile stayed mine.

It burned too much, the stolen heat
pulsing through my palms. I placed it
on the mantel, wanting to be found.
I left that day, I just ran away,
what could I say but “there’s your smile” .
