Hidden Alterations

by JJ Johnson

We have all gone through changes
For the better and for worse
Our minds have rearranged us
Both in forward and reverse

Don't worry about changes
We all turn yet still fly straight
As I fill these bare pages
I can't help but deviate

I have passed through some stages
My outlook feels different
Don't stew over our changes
Or think you're insufficient

When you see how I have changed
You'll know I'm still the same
Though you'll see my face has aged
My spirit and love remain

I can't wait to see your face
I'm intrigued with each letter
Changes from a far off place
I feel they're for the better

Author's Note: One of my earliest surviving poems. Not my best work, but considering it was written a little more than 8 months before "Aisumasen Renee", I can see that even then, I was expressing things that mattered on the inside over that which is superficial. It's hard to believe this poem will be 27 years old next month and that I was only 17 when I wrote it. I wish I was 17 again, but that's another poem altogether....
