heavy brow despair by Matthew Sharpthe ego is a heavy brow
weighing my vision down
into indecision
so i contemplate
to combat its purpose
and here i am,
patient enough to do it again
even when it never works
spoken from a part of me that has plenty of time to wait for it to work
so i take a million years and think for a minute
and i come to terms with the infinite 'me'
just to start again. 02/25/2007 Posted on 02/26/2007 Copyright © 2024 Matthew Sharp

Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 02/26/07 at 07:43 AM "the ego is a heavy brow" is an amazing formula. this rings true. Identity and that weight of ego has been a source of contemplation for ages. But I have never seen it put better than in that one sentence you've formed. I know of a composer who said (when he formed an odd, dissonant chord)
"I'll give that chord the test of time right now!"--preferring not to wait for history, and played it over and over for a long time, listening to it himself. The weight carried in this poem diminishes by the insight and awareness it embodies. The mystery it deals with may be unsolvable but the incredible joy and reality that is in the moment of creation is the only bliss that goes beyond the heaviness of the weighted brow. At least that's what I tend to think. |
