Rose, her inner child

by Rhonda Maneki

I saw your inner child,
her name was Rose,
she was beautiful filled with
laughter and light.

She was always running
from shadows which chased
her, yet she played with me,
In the sun

-Sometimes-

Only those
rare times.
When she was safe
and could trust me,
and herself.

And then you would
return and forget the
laughter, the light.
You would draw your
cloak of darkness back
around you...

And leave.

I felt like a mommy to
you once in awhile,
I loved you - I saw
your innocence. I wish you
had been able to embrace
the light within you,
instead of being
swallowed up by the
overwhelming darkness,
in which you were more
at home in.

I will miss this
child I got to know..

A true Rose who was freed,
today her petals of laughter
is released upon the wind..

I think, I heard her laugh,
within her new found freedom,
as she took flight upon
Angels wings.

I think,
I cried today
I loved you,
the inner
child in you.

Author's Note: My ex-mother in law was a complex soul - over 14 years of marriage I saw many sides of her. This particular aspect was what I loved about her, this was the only time she smiled, this was what she feared the most - it revealed her humanness and vulnerability. It leaves me sad...
