I've Gone Away

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

Show me the way to go with the least possible pain

The geese have exploded upward
out of the lake

I’ve been away
I’ve been away too long

I don’t know who to call I have no womb
to return to I curl and curl

become a small pale thing you can hold
in your palm

I’ve been away
I’ve been away too long

I spin and I spin until I have
rings like Saturn

I’m behind museum glass
an exhibit from 100 years ago
I was a fighter back then

There’s no time to waste

Between the body of who we are
and the mind of who we become
is the physical act of longing losing
of loss
filling our throats like water

I’ve been away
eyes crusted closed I’ve been

away too long
