no conversation necessary

by Emily Davidson

he's got books on the dashboard
that slide back and forth on every turn
as he holds his paper coffee cup and cigarette
in the same hand,
the other on the steering wheel

the radio is loud
the windows are open
to let the february air creep in as
the sunshine bounces off the pavement

we are squinting as he drives,
no conversation necessary,
just the scenery, the radio, and the books
shifting from side to side
