Pardon Me

by Jeffrey Parren

Pardon me if I don't scream with joy,
this Valentine's Day.
Working in the restaurant industry's
enough to make me hate the day forever.
Happy couples eating.
People going to have sex later for sure.
As for me.  Luxury to work late and drive home.
My only walkout was on this day.
Only one, ever...today...years and years ago.
I still remember.
Lest we forget how many I have endured
single, or seemingly single.
I cannot remember a happy Valentine's Day
in my memento shaped mind.
All those niceties are gone.
So pardon me, while I take my wits,
my loneliness, and an adult dvd, to bed tonight.

feel for you. valentine's day is supposed to be romantic, but i decided to argue with my hubby instead. it's not just the single guys that go to bed feeling alone.

As a person who has no love for holidays, I could not agree more. The expectation to have a wonderful, romantic day just doesn't exist for most of us; especially those who have to work.
