Picture of Deceit

by Jason Hannigan

As she sorted through his piles of junk
Scattered through his room,
She saw a picture of him; her friend.
Not taken but a week ago,
He was smiling.

“Be on your best behavior,”
His mother had said to him.
She brought him into the photo room
And he waited.
The photo-man readied the camera
And told him to smile,
So he did.
What did it matter if the picture lied
As long as others didn’t know?
He was used to masking his emotions,
Maybe that is why he did what he did?

It was the smile of his father,
Whom had recently passed away.
It didn’t show that inside he hungered.
And in their misty blue haze,
His eyes kept the secret his face had sealed,
But his heart well knew:
His world had fallen apart.

She looked upon his picture,
And a tear mournfully scaled her cheek.
What he did was the cause of her pain,
Though he meant her well.
She smiled at the picture
And in heaven, he wept.

again Jason....this was a moving imagery and depthful poem. Well done. Very Nick Cave ish.... Loved the line "His eyes kept the secret his face had sealed, But his heart well knew: His world had fallen apart." I think we all have sealed some of our selves especially those of us in the rainbow clan.... keep on writing...really enjoying to read your work!

Very moving, and on a theme that many of us know so well.
