La Clinica

by Susan Q Tomas

Momma trajo a 5 bebés a la clínica hoy

5 tuvieron el gripe
4 tuvieron la tos,
3 tuvieron los parasitos
2 tuvieron scabies,
1 tuvo dolor de oido.

5 vieron la enfermera,
5 vieron la doctora,
5 fue a la farmacia, y
5 fueron a sus casa,
5 fueron felices

5 went to the pharmacy
5 went home
5 were happy.

Author's Note: I just returned from my second mission trip to La Ceiba, Honduras. This year I worked in the clinic. I don't have a medical backround what so ever, but my Spanish vocabulary expanded by leaps and bounds. Working in a clinic was truly moving. Please pardon my poor Spanish in this poem. I know the patients pardoned my poor Spanish at la clinica.

A touching scenario, and what I found interesting was the dichotomy between the human story encapsulated here, and the framework of numbers, which for me reflects the archetypal dilemma in medicine, the balance between personal involvement and detachment. Or maybe not :) Also, the numbers look remarkably similar in Spanish and English *inane giggle*

You've caught the ambience of mission clinic work in this succinct but descriptive poem from all I have heard and read.
