cranky valentine's poem

by Maria Francesca

the sun rises up
with a smile on its face
and the birds tweet and twitter
all over the place
-even cobwebs are dew deck'd,
like gem-crusted lace

and the world is ecstatic
the universe glows
and sings, "Love's in the air-
put aside all your woes!"
and the sentiment's lovely,
as far as it goes

but I don't buy what's written
in heart-shaped cards;
my glass slipper is broken-
I've slipped on the shards
and the the falling's a thrill
but the landing is hard

so don't knock on my door
'cause I don't want to play-
be a good little boy
and stay out of my way -
'cause I hate,
how I hate
fucking Valentine's Day.
