Together And Yet, We're Alone

by Leonard M Hawkes

There's an emptiness sometimes at the end of the day,
When I just long to talk and to share.
It's not that I really have something to say;
It's more that I just want you there.

Maggie, O, Maggie, where have the years gone?
Maggie, if only we'd known;
Maggie, O, Maggie, you must feel it too,
That silence of standin' alone.

Sometimes in the winter when the snow's in the trees,
It feels like you're back at my side;
Your hand in my hand just watchin' the storm,
Contented and warm, satisfied.

Maggie, O, Maggie, where have the years gone?
Maggie, if only we'd known;
Maggie, yes, Maggie, you must feel it too,
That coldness of standin' alone.

And then in the fields with the spring come again,
I still feel you there on the farm;
Your spirit with me, plantin' in faith,
You holding on tight to my arm.

Maggie, O, Maggie, where have the years gone?
Maggie, if only we'd known;
Maggie, yes, Maggie, you must feel it too,
We're never quite ever alone.

Maggie, O, Maggie, you must know it too
We're together and yet we're alone.

Sweetly and strongly songful, details and the repetition of her name make this more powerfully personal. Do you sing it? I imagine you must!

Oh, the loss is tangible, and your words make it so. Thank you for sharing it.
