Our Goodbye is Like White Gravy

by Melanie J Yarbrough

I can stare out through the waterspots
there are fire escapes
just like I'd imagined
when I imagined my second story view
the tips of the lilies are browning
and you make some slight analogy
subtlety has never been a strength of yours
I knew when you didn't return my letters
I wouldn't hear from you again,
though we speak on the phone every night.
and you're so strong
taking my absence like a man,
with a sip of wine and oh, what was her name?

Author's Note: it is thick and slightly sweet.
