"Our Tongues are Swords, Our Hearts are Shields"

by Max Phineas

Hate what they fear
Fear what they hate
So much is destroyed.

They will win the battle
But lose the war
We are stronger now.

Deny what they ignore
Point fingers at us instead
Blame us for what they've done
To themselves
and to those brave enough to fight.

They will win the battle
But lose the war
We won't stand for it now.
No more, pray, no more.

The hateful words must cease
And the abhorrent glances on the streets
And the mindless beatings
Giving new meanings to all we once held as solid truths.

It could happen to you too
And it has to stop now

Before it persists beyond our greatest resistance
And before it perforates the naïve hearts and weakened minds.

We must direct the aimless
Before they are mislead.

And we must relinquish life
From those who wish us dead.

Author's Note: I have been so disturbed over such free usage of the new "F" word. In schoolyards and in workplaces, and it is sickening. I'm rereading this now..the rhymes were unintentional.

Cole, everytime I read one of your poems, it's hard for me to believe that you're in high school. You have more wisdom then many adults. This poem is about one thing, but could be about so many other things that dictate adult life. And yes, we might win the battle but lose the war. And adults may lead, but we are the example to younger generations. It's teens like you who I hope will lead the world with your strong convictions (and may they stay true as you grow). The 5th stanza (plus the rest of the poem) is wonderful, because it applies to the mindlessnes of what we sometimes forget. Thanks for reminding people like me.
