The Leave-taking

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

Farewell! She cries from just
above her body.
A blood clot has burst
and the earth-bound woman
is struck dead quick so
she feels no pain.
But the spirit has a split-
second of remorse, of sadness
for what she leaves behind as
the husband rushes into the bathroom
to find her on the floor.
He gives her CPR, shouting, yelling,

her heart aches while she visits her
daughter dreaming dreams she
won’t remember, watches the way her
hands curls up near her mouth,
the way it did as a baby.

She is not the body any longer; she is
ethereal material, she sees
a light in front of her,
that long-talked-about light
and before she steps into it
she looks back at husband and daughter
and says, I’m sorry for what you
will go though. Farewell! I will
Still kiss you goodnight.
