captain hook is dead because the lost boys all stopped caring

by Lauren Singer

there's nothing in this room
but roaches and cellphones.

no one is unique anymore.
i cross my legs and pretend not to notice
faltering friendships and awkward silences.

you are not you are not who you used to be are not you
anymore.

i liked you vulnerable and out of shape
when you didn't puke out your dinner
and stayed long enough to laugh at
my vulgarity and swear off men with me.

it is a defense you yield with clumsy efforts
purse your lips and pretend to be something you're not
because it's easier than admitting you're the girls you hate
in looser clothes and smaller tits.

just keep slopping on the lip-gloss
and dance until the music's too loud to give a shit
and shake your ass for the room because you're nothing
but the hoax you fooled yourself into being.

i guess lost boys do grow up but they never
showed that part because it would be too tragic.
and wendy fucked peter and that's why everything went to shit in the end.
the crocodile was a metaphor for how quickly time gets eaten when
you're too young to question it.

you lied to me when you said
nothing would ever change.

you are not you are not who you used to be are not you
anymore.

you dragged me around the city to buy him gifts.
and now our life is replaced by a pierced dick and a man
who spouts "i love you's" without making your flinch.
remember when you left me tripping acid by myself while you
called him from your fucking phone that
never stops buzzing in my ear to remind me that
i always hated the kind of girl that you've become
and when you dangle yourself like a loose bitch
to a crowd of wagging tongues, does it feel good?
because that's all you can offer as you soak up
the greedy eyes of silly boys you check off on your list,

and you laugh like you mean it.
but you are not you are not who use used to be are not you
anymore.

but who you were when i knew you by heart
would have spit in your face
if she saw you now.

To deem this piece fantastic wouldn't quite do it justice. That last stanza is a kick in the gut, but a necessary one. I've been that girl. Far too many times. Luckily, I did spit on myself. And speaking of luck, my best friend stuck around untill I found the balls to do it. Great write, even better read. Thanks for this. I've favorited it.

Nobody is who we think they are- people grow (sometimes), but they always change- for the better, or worse. Good read. Great write and BTW- I loved the title!

This is the poem that made me want to join this site. I'm happy that I get to say something about it now! Absolutely excellent writing. I can't even relate to the emotions you're dealing with in this poem from personal experience, but you made me feel them anyway. Stellar job.

Wow! How did I miss this one first time around! What a fantastic piece! All of life can be summed up in two of your lines: "you lied to me when you said nothing would ever change." so true...

This poem is actually the third atom bomb the U.S. created and were going to drop on Japan during WWII. Lauren picked it up on eBay for a song and a dance and has subsequently posted it here for your viewing pleasure.
