brown-eyed girl

by Peter Humphreys

alone I sit
as shadows
promenade
against the
westerly horizon
where sky and
sun merge into
an opaque and
misty fastness

alone I sit
as families
walk in the
lightening
sun and men
stand their
watch for fish
beside the
swirling sea

alone I sit
and feel the
tender heat
upon my hand
and pen as
slowly a breeze
from the eastern
hills rolls down
the terraced slopes
and stirs the hair
of a brown eyed
girl who waits
her eyes to see
