"Death, is it not true / you are everyone's lover"

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

(title by Jude Nutter, “Crow”)

I have certainly sought
you out even since youth, that cherry-
lipped time where I smacked, smacked them
together; thousands write
about you as though you are
an ending, the antithesis to Life,
but I’ve danced with you on echoing
ballroom floors. You are a companion –
not the wounded version – of Life, not the devil’s
playing card, you are
neither romantic nor pleasant, but
you are honest to a fault. But Death
can have no fault, as much as we
blame it for its long arms and spindly
legs. It simply is the eye-opener
to those who think Life deserves to be
thrown away with the clumpy cat litter.
It is merely a voice saying, open your eyes,
lover, to this crazy world. Do not think
you’re the only one.
