"Gracelift"

by Max Phineas

"If I tried harder..." she trailed off.
To what? Be something you're not?

I never understood that urge
But the plea remained:
Change me
Take me and remake me.

Compliance, my middle name, overtook me once again.
"Close your eyes..."

The concealer, relieved of its duty
Revealed the human flaws that
she tried so desperately to erase.
I wiped off the years of wear
And the lipstick from which spewed pretense and lies.

Finally removing the mascara
That so clearly shielded her eyes

I spun her toward the mirror.

"You can look now."

Her reflection glowed in the noon sun
But it was her smile that was blinding.

"It's...me!"

If only we could as easily strip away the pretenses inside ourselves...well done.

Very well said, man, especially in the last line.

Wow. That's powerful. What inspired this?
