This is Progress?

by Alisa Js

could this be?
not sure,
we keep pressing ever forward
one step at a time
with thoughts of progress
but is there?
if its progress we've made
then why aren't we where we need to be?
you, over there
me, still right here
how much longer will this kind of progress take?
why don't I see you?
when I look around me,
why can't I touch you?
its torture!

words on a page
a voice on the phone,
all the right sayings
but I'm still alone
just like before,
even now ...

maybe its not progress we need
but rather results from an outcome
something to measure
those steps we take,
something more to hold onto
at the end of each day,
something to show us the way
agree?

I really like that second to last stanza, the way the voice almost trails off at the end, like something occured to them in mid-sentence. Awesome work.

I agree with Gabriel, the second to last stanza adds a real edge to this beautiful piece of angst. I need to try using the questioning as you ahve done. Makes the mind work, doesn't it?
