"Sprockets and the Stepdads I Never Had"

by Cristy M.

My dad's not like your dad
(we both had dads that they'd sent us

in their robot-keeps and their robot-shoes
I questioned their very quintessence
since they be what my daddy should be).

"My dad's not like your daddy," we tell
the other kids in the playground
stabbing them slanders between the sand
and they call us the aggressors
but we twist our little curls and
we plump our little lips and we beg a teacher,

"Call my daddies, let him pick up the phone
with his robot-arms and he'll talk to you
with his robot-antenna and he'll tell you so-and-so.

I know that daddy's like this-es and thats."
Our daddies not like their daddies
like all daddies aren't programed all the same.
