The Other Side of Night

by Leonard M Hawkes

I know in you those godly gifts
That once I knew in me:
Beauty, radiance, an easy grace
Attract so naturally.

Age and its corrosions,
And that tendency to bend,
Callous the heart, darken the soul,
Afflict what does not mend.

But seeing you, recognizing,
May be the hope of light:
That glimmering in the blackness
On the other side of night.
