a comic

by Melinda Sordino

they swirl just behind my eyes,
waiting for an opening,
waiting for a moment
so that they can escape.

half hoping thy can hear me
half hoping they'll ignore my cries
i feel wetness on my cheek.
i must hide my tears,
hide my pain.

the knife slices down my belly
as i push those waves that
threaten to drown me
back inside.

i slap on a smile;
i hope that no one saw.
i tell a joke at my own expense:
i have an audience again,
and they all have forgotten.
