Ahoy Mates

by Tony Whitaker

"They think me mad--Starbuck does;
but I'm demoniac,
I am madness maddened!
That wild madness that's only calm to comprehend itself!"
-Moby Dick

we’ve spent another stormy year
onboard this ship at sea
as all are certain salty tars
we keep her bow alee

the calm allows us time to dock
to share our times ashore
the scores and scars of victory
from our bouts when called to war

now the breeze is blowing again
it is time to go the lines
batten down the hatches
and face this bay of mines

the sea starts to swell again
we roll her into the gales
“shipmates we face another storm”
and we laugh as we man the sails

I love this! What a beautiful tribute. This was so well written it immediately took me back to my work place yesterday, where our service manager (a southern baptist preacher) who has been sick with the flu came and flopped down in my office with a stack of paperwork -he grinned evilly over and began casually rifling through- and glanced up at me in time to see the can of lysol slammed down on the desk between us, aimed in his direction with my ready finger on the trigger. Then my supervisor click clacking down the hall in her heels... "what's your workload like?" as she cast a glance at our pitiful Christmas tree alluding to the disassembly... state auditor in the conference room going through box after box... I really loved this!

Great imagery, man. This is perfectly rendered and brought to life. Really well done.
