The Way Adam and Eve Burned

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

The plane will join the gate, click it into place
like knuckles readjusting,
and I will step down that hall,
my heart beating as though I was being chased,
but I’m doing the running toward,
licking my lips, making them wet and supple,
curling and uncurling my fingers
as I lug my carry-on over my shoulder,
the jelly-colored carpet stretching before me –
how much farther? And I think
about your tall, thin stature, pressing
myself against you in a crowded airport,
a secret of sex known only to us;
I imagine that first embrace and our
genetalia already moving toward the other;
already there is fog on the car windows,
I imagine all this and when I step into
the terminal and see you, it’s as if
no one is around and we are both
naked and we run to each other the way
Adam and Eve must have burned for each other
and soon we are fused as one back at your
house and with you inside me, I am home again.
