"You Erased My Creative Streak"

by Max Phineas

I tried to write about you
Without the irritating presence of
Lovey-dovey
Kiss-me-now clichés.

I tried to write
With substance and depth:
overtones and undertones

But in the name of all
I still hold as true
No simile or metaphor
is brilliant enough to convey my affection.

I've rhymed and reasoned
And pondered and reckoned

And still no words surface-
Save some lingering lovestruck lexicons
That will never suffice.

Alliteration, assonance
Hyperbole
Interminably tumble about my thoughts.

I tried to avoid this
Most truly, I did.

But in the name of all
That is decent and pure

I love you,
I know it,
I'm certain.

I think it's lovely and pure.
