Winter's Quiet Song

by Mary Ellen Smith

Snowflakes glisten in the sunshine

Like sprinkled sugar on a cake,

Singing a song of Christmastime

While not a sound they make.

These winter flurries find their way,

Dancing along they meet the ground.

And gather they on limb and bow

Without whispering a sound.

Cold rooftops get a down blanket

Of pure, soft feathered drifts.

Tis just one more way that winter

Distributes its many gifts.

Icicles that frame each housetop

Light up like diamonds on a thread

As sparkling snowflakes put light to

One more frozen overhead.

Our friendly snowman in the yard

Smiling, welcomes this descent.

And grinning he the more I think

When the weathers inclement.

Flurries frost the windows sweetly

As they draw close to congregate

Then with the brush of winter

Begin to decorate.

And yes the sounds of winter

Have many voices, true.

But some snowfall sings silently

A hymn to me and you.

An idyllic scene pictured exquisitely. (Think lots of folks not so sanquine about winter this year.)
