The Child

by Joan Serratelli

The baby was conceived
out of love
but when her father
found out; he threw a fit

who would support this child
the young father who could not
even support himself?
Or would it be the mother who
was only a kid herself

The baby would be born
with love, somehow, someway
money would come
and the child would be brought up
with a sense if itself

The father would learn
to support his child-
to put the child's needs
above his own
The young mother would learn
to be a mother herself
to love, to nurture
to know when to ask for help
and to accept what was offered

The child would be loved
and in the end; after all
the fighing and screaming was done
the child was a blessing
for everyone

Like calm after a storn, there is a welcome tone here. And "to love, to nurture, to know when to ask for help and to accept what was offered" is so important. Thanks.

I've always held the belief that life comes exactly when it does, and it's always precious, always. I'm glad it worked out so well. :-)
