"Pandas are Heavy on the Mind of ..."

by Cristy M.

"Pandas are Heavy on the Mind of a Girl that Loves Sushi"

Bamboo hut left vacant but for me
a tender corner caresses my tea
milk, honey, and a blueberry scone
is solemn company
that requires no heartache,
this is what I write:

He holds me slow in invisible panda paws
cools fast with his high-tailed rubbery.
The road rash burns icesicle scars
on my bruised hips through their drawn pale
mocking my tattoos, mocking my sincerity.

Drawls like drooling on a lonely pillowcase
to explain (with drunken prosody)
the lack which six month's absence makes,

"There is too much space
there is too much space
there is too much space between us
there is twenty-two hundred states
there is twenty-three thousand cigarettes
there is twenty-four million voices
there is twenty-five billion hooded jackets
there is twenty-six trillion bones sticking out of my back

there is too much space
there is too much of coffee beans
of trail mix
of cheese cake
of strawberries
of muffin mix
of all these things."

A twelve-step program
and a nicotine patch
skip the tracks on
his best soundtrack boy status

to relieve the pressure
of letting go.
