On Reading Letters

by Angela Cotterman

To feel that forbidden
swirl of excitement warns
me against you, yet
I bring myself back
to then, when all that I knew
was freedom to love and hate
you more than any of the others.
Now, I'm almost married,
waking each morning to a constant
gravity of body
and a love not nearly dramatic
like our sea once was.
