She Sings For Freedom

by Jayme L Helmick

Splintered tears fall and cover a warped suitcase filled to the brim with my guilt and despair
as I cinch the laces tighter on a cloak of innocence donned too often to be believable

The truth that you think you know is a soap bubble maze, constructed by a mind still held captive by its vanities... and I don't have the strength to fight it anymore
My greatest sin was in loving a sister of my soul too deeply for his insecure comfort

We all know why the caged bird sings, and I did my part to try to keep the door propped open
and I could play the part of Pilate and give you the truth on a silver platter, washing my hands of the death and consequences to follow...
But how to help the wary dove who chooses a prison of her own making?

Childish laughter echoes in my dreams of a blue-eyed angel who loves me and will miss having me in her life
while her loving parents hold her closely in the cage of fear beside them

I have lost the war
And my heart sings for redemption.
