She Wore Her Favorite Dress

by Melissa Panther

She wore her favorite dress
To church on Sunday
In the middle of Spring
It matched the scenery of
Flowers in bloom and
Her frame of mind
She sang loud and off-tune

She wore her favorite dress
To her daughters high school graduation
At the beginning of Summer
A celebrated occasion by a
Proud mother
Another milestone they shared with
Each other

She wore her favorite dress
To her new job downtown
Four weeks into Fall
Overqualified yet
Back in the swing
Something had changed with
No indication at all

She wore her favorite dress
With a sweater
As she peacefully slept
On the first day of Winter
As we laid her to rest

She wore her favorite dress
Standing at her grave
Everyday there after
Words carved in
Ice cold stone
Are all that’s left to document
Your existence
And my memories.

It’s hard to believe I wouldn’t see you
Wear your favorite dress
Anymore

This is absolutely wonderful. I am quieted by its thoughtfulness ... I send you hugs and warmth. ~N
