The Veteran

by Charles M Harrison

Every day we may see a face
as common as the rest.
An unknown hero who gave
to us all their very best.
A protector of our freedom
and our way of life.
Some ones son, daughter,
mother, father, husband or wife.
The need was answered
when our nation gave the call.
By these who knew
they could not let it fall.
Pain, blood and death
many saw beyond belief.
For each fallen comrade
brothers in arms share the grief.
We will never have to know
what their service truly cost.
If they will ever find within
the humanity that they lost.
Because the haunting memories
are a cross left for them to bear.
We can only thank them
and show our love and care.
The veteran could be
the next person you greet.
They are in the crowd
you pass on the street.
Hero's now known only
to family and close friend.
Ask them and they say
I would do it all again.
They are old and they are young
and they truly are our best.
Thank our lord in heaven
with them we are blest.
