Translucent Tears

by Nikki Benson

I smile, but my heart crying

I mourn the happiness

That I no longer hope for with you

Things haven’t changed

But my mind and heart are different

I used to laugh with hope

But now I laugh with stifled despair

I miss you

I miss the way that I hoped for us

I miss the freedom I felt to love you

Now my tears

Translucent as the air

Are always there

Mourning my freedom to love you

Freedom with out bars or judgment

Now, even my own heart condemns my love

Unreciprocated but still there

When I smile at you with translucent tears
