every day
He sets a table
and decorates it
with wind
and sandy beaches
and puppies
and music
and chocolate.

He serves up
platters of laughter
and bowls of sunshine
and cups overflowing with opportunity

and every day
we push all this aside,
excuse ourselves

so that we can set a good example
and embrace our responsibilities;

no time for puppies
and sunshine
and music
when there's worrying to do -

can't be filling up
on chocolate and love
when there are so many heaping platefuls
of shame and obligation, you know.

and every night
as He's washing the dishes,
He shakes His head to Himself

and thinks
'Next time,
I really have to come up
with a more appreciative
guest list.'
