first landing

by Peter Humphreys

the woods were
seeping with
early rain
the mist so
low it touched
the tops of oak
and beech
quietly slyly
we slid our boats
onto the shore
not knowing
who or what
to greet after
months of long
hard craft to
bring us here
where Atlantic
shore and inner
seas belie the
tranquil autumn
breeze that
today of all
days is still
and as the
rain runs
down our knecks
and fear gives
way to resolution
we build a fire
on that lonely
strand and
think of
homeward longings

Author's Note: Over 5,000 years ago, settlers landed upon the North Mayo coast to farm. It is believed that they travelled from as far as Spain to this remote Atlantic shore. Here they settled and made lives for themselves and their families. Can you just imagine what that journey entailed?

Great description, pithy content.
