Sage by Joe CramerThe sage on the stage
As I wait, watching you
All the while, for awhile.
You comment on my
Conjugations of verbs
As if I were some actor upon a stage.
I wait, even longer, watching you
Wondering what you will say
On this same day.
The sage on the stage
Stands in the wings
Awaiting the understudy
That never arrives.
Instead I look, listen, watch
Waiting for the day when I can say
All of the words of my weary heart.
The curtain goes up
As the house lights go down.
Nothing is left
But a few lines spoken
And so many more left unsaid.
The sage on the stage stands alone
Waiting for Act I, scene 1 to begin.
So much for our revels
As they wind down to their end.
All the world ends up on a stage
Watching the watchers.
