Abated

by Alison McKenzie

Your face rests perfectly in my hand
One last time in my memory,
Your beard prickling my palm,
Your eyes closing as you lean into me.
One last time
I remember our years,
The light and love shimmering forward
To bathe me in this moment,
The darkness held back by time and forgiveness.
Nearly two years have passed since our last kiss,
Your lipsÂ’ last brush against my cheek
As near to me as the last time I inhaled.
I will not remember the pain of it;
The softness of your eyes is all that remains,
The sad love as we said our last goodbye.
I love you, John,
As I always will in that special way,
Though we are no longer joined,
Even as our paths separate
Take care, and walk in love.
