I Woke Up

by Alison McKenzie

I woke up this morning
With the promise of your voice
Lingering in the air all around me
Joy of hope and knowing
Delightfully infusing my aura
Sweet fragrance of love’s elusive blossom
Invisible in tangible towers of words
I climb to dizzying heights
Without proper harnesses
No chute to help me land
And I free fall away
Waking with such a start at the bottom
As I land once again on solid ground
Disgusted by my shattered heart
And how it bleeds
The strong jaws of reality
Reminding me one more time
That I should not climb
A fool to fall
A fool to hope
I will not bleed again
Steel intentions bending every time
Wondering when and if I’ll ever break
Wondering when and if I’ll ever learn
This verse that keeps repeating
Wondering if there’ll ever be that one man
In whose arms precious I remain
Until my final breath
