Queen of Hearts

by Genevieve Sturrock

i'm playing the lover's game
you're the dealer of the cards
with a stare as cold as ice
and a heart that's just as hard

and no matter how you deal them
they always fall the same
i'm the queen of hearts
without a chance to win the game

i'm the queen of hearts
looking at my hand again
i fall apart with a broken heart
when i see the joker's grin

yes, i'm the queen of hearts
being played for a fool
and you're the ace of spades
making all the rules

you're laying down the laws
and setting up my life
you change my plans
with a sleight of hand
and a double-bladed knife

i don't understand
why i can't win one time
you hold the cards
you hold my heart
just once won't you be kind

i'm the queen of hearts
waiting for my chance
and you're the ace of spades
doing the death card's mocking dance

yes, i'm the queen of hearts
waiting for my turn
i know i'll fall
and you're the cause
but i guess i'll never learn

and when you deal the cards
i'm the queen of hearts again
face to face with an ice cold ace
wearing the joker's grin
face to face with an ice cold ace
wearing the joker's grin
