Our Timeline

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

I used to need to see my “him” every day.
An empty apartment was a reminder
of an unfurnished life.
And after three weeks of spending evenings
at your home, cuddling on your couch,
microwaving butternut squashes, memorizing
presidents off a mug, tonight we’ve decided
to take a night off and I come home
from work looking forward to nothing
but the cat licking my cheek.
I get one hour with you tonight
and I admit I must quell that

part of me that wants to cling
and raise a fuss because we have all
the time in the world, don’t we.
Our timeline is, for the first time in my life,
that of a healthy relationship.
We are not Siamese twins;
we are comrades in discovering the
place where love hides, its eyelashes
batting sweetly in the dark.
So I can miss you for a day – I have you
memorized.
