monday morning

by Genevieve Sturrock

a high pitched shriek pulls me from the depths of my dreams
my eyes barely focus as a dark shadow bursts into my room
a large weight thumps onto the unprotected curve of my back
sharp angles dig painfully into my sleep relaxed flesh
warm bands tighten around my neck cutting off my air
i come fully awake as i struggle to draw breath
i wish i could start every day like today

mommy, mommy, mommy, i love you, mommy

i love you, too
