red creepers

by Peter Humphreys

red creepers
on the wall
betray the
coming of the
fall into the
winter's dark
white snow as
ancient gateways
finely wrought
in iron black
and granite blonde
remembering footsteps
booted hard of years
when spidered flags
flew high and proud
but now all is quiet
children play
wide swinging ferries
ply their path
across the swirling
Rhine and as the
dusk grows deep
and lovers in the
woods do peep into
the joy of coming
a raven black
stands on a mast
and watches yes
just watches
