Flashes

by Jay Davenport

Flashes of darkness and flashes of light,
Flashes that contradict themselves tonight,
Look there inside, and there my heart breaks,
For one flash of light is all that is takes.

Flashes of darkness and flashes of soul,
No sign of remorse, no loss of control,
She’s hiding her personal side with a wall,
No barrier permanent, this one must fall.

Flashes of brilliance and flashes of dark,
Examine my heart, there you’ll see a mark,
Which she has put there, indelibly placed,
So no one but Time can that mark there erase.

With my eye on her, I turn and I flee,
But all of these flashes are bothering me,
Why won’t she just let her real self show?
I will never see it, this much I now know.
