A Little Porto

by Jeffrey Parren

I grasped the miniature wine glass
after paying many a bill
leaving purple licks to glue envelopes.
Walking down the staircase to my room,
I notice my world begins to shift and soften.
Third glass upon completion,
Graham's Six Grapes Porto,
Like grape jelly liquified, absolute ecstacy.
Life is so much nicer,
doing laundry,
paying bills,
prospecting another day of work,
seven, eight, nine?
I cannot even remember
how many in a row it is.
Yet, at the thought of another day,
this simple little porto
makes all these simple agonies
vanish into the night.
Laundry spinning,
laptop keys rattling,
fingers feverishly producing poetry,
the only thing missing is company.
I crawl into my bed of loneliness daily,
yet settle I will not,
Graham's Porto,
a wife.

Author's Note: All I want is a companion to read and write poetry with, to drink some Porto, to fall in love with, to marry.
