pattern by Jared Fladeland
the blues is a rhythm
set in stone.
we play 12 measures religiously
and sing about the women who have caused our souls
to crack into use-to-be shards,
now on sale for seventy-five cents
at a garage sale on the corner
of Hope Street and Faith avenue.
depression is a direct correlation
between defunct valves in the head
oozing the bad juice into the good juice
and the toe nails that seem to grow faster
when I sit around pulling out my teeth
for relief.
make me a quilt of suffering including:
massacres in Sudan.
the holocaust.
Crucifixions.
slavery.
conquered people and their fates.
and all the things that occur
behind closed doors.
I bet you'll deduce
a lovely pattern.

Posted by Laura Doom on 10/07/06 at 07:37 PM Well, blues for me relates universal truths and their consequnces, whilst remaining intensely personal. Opening doors is synonymous with a 'progression', I guess, though it won't make a 'lovely' pattern for everyone. My point is that toe-nails grow faster when you push your teeth below gum level. Most deductions are against tax, all part of the material quilt of music. |

and Laura's "My point is that toe-nails grow faster when you push your teeth below gum level." punched out the air sucked in between remaining teeth recently gasped between chuckles. The blues are a rhythm unto themselves, their inspiration sang out as the miseries are sucked in... between what remains of some embittered biters. Just loved this. Thanks again. I do enjoy a chuckle before a sob. |
Posted by Therese Elaine on 10/14/06 at 03:55 PM How lovely to read this while indulging in Memphis Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith...the blues are gut-wrenching in their honesty, exultant and horrifying in their solidarity and as I've always said "this feeling was meant to have a bottle with it"...and of course, some blues. I read some other pieces of your work -I like it -and I'll keep reading more. My curiousity is piqued -and I intend to probe your library. |

to this, I have no witty comment,
no reason for why I adore it so;
just take my silence for gratitude
with having been able to read
this.
