The Chair of 100 Legs

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

From the chair of 100 legs
you take my hand and twist
my thumb ring round and round
while we watch the movie.

From the box of innermost desires
I pull out gloves that when placed
on your lap make you into
whomever you most want to be
and when I see, then, that you are
still beside me, I kiss your lips
and know you are, deep down, the same
not because you didn't wish hard enough,
but because there is no one better
you could have become.

You are tops already.

From the chair of 100 legs
whether you stay seated or stand,
I'm still beside you, listening
to you whisper the plot of "Superman"
in my ear.
