what we need

by Charlie Morgan

... is real hearty and intense affection
between the old people and the young ones.
being altogether free to choose
what company we would,
would we then choose our father and mother?

daily life's talisman of goodness and wisdom
allows forbearance. the rich reward:
is getting to watch the happiness of our own children
and grandchildren, which is never enough.
this anguish describes grandfathers and grandmothers.

all of us in a mode of compulsory affection.

Too bad this can't be put into practice more, since the wisdom of age would definitely help the knowledge of youth. And, it's where we're all going one day, so why shouldn't we learn from those who are older than us. I barely knew my grandparents, or not at all. In my life, this has been a great sadness. Thank you for this wisdom Chaz. ;-)
